Back Story: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, by the worst kids in the history of the world. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, is a children's novel that was written by Barbara Robinson in 1971. The novel tells a story of six misfit children who volunteer to star in their town's Sunday School Christmas Pageant who end up teaching the town the true meaning of Christmas.
So many are familiar with this classic story and many of us mama's have shared this inspiring story to our kiddos throughout the holiday season. Us mama's have been waiting for the release of this one for decades now!

If you are not familiar with the story, here is a brief synopsis.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson is a humorous, heartwarming story about the true spirit of Christmas. The story centers around the Herdmans, a family of six unruly, misfit kids who are notorious in their small town for causing trouble. The Herdman children—Ralph, Imogene, Leroy, Claude, Ollie, and Gladys—are loud, rude, and mischievous, stealing and bullying their way through life. Everyone avoids them whenever possible, especially at church, where they never show up. However, everything changes one year when the Herdmans unexpectedly decide to attend Sunday school.
The story is narrated by a young girl whose mother, Grace Bradley, is put in charge of the church’s annual Christmas pageant after the usual director breaks her leg. This year’s play is in danger of falling apart, especially when the Herdmans show up and volunteer for the lead roles. To the horror of the other church members, the Herdmans insist on playing Mary, Joseph, the Wise Men, and even the Angel of the Lord.
Despite the other church kids’ dismay, the Herdmans approach the nativity story with fresh, if unconventional, enthusiasm. Since they’ve never heard the Christmas story before, they react with astonishment to the hardships Mary and Joseph endured. They’re outraged at the lack of shelter for Mary and horrified by King Herod’s plans. Their innocence and genuine, if sometimes misplaced, passion begin to change the way others see the Christmas story, reminding everyone of the true meaning behind it.
As rehearsals proceed, the townspeople anticipate chaos and disaster. Yet, they slowly realize the Herdmans are bringing something unique and raw to the play. Although their methods are unorthodox—the Wise Men bring a ham instead of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and Imogene, as Mary, ends up with a tear-streaked face—this performance unexpectedly captures the vulnerability and emotion of the nativity. By stripping away the usual polished pageantry, the Herdmans highlight the struggles and hope in the Christmas story in a way that feels real to everyone present.
In the end, the pageant is a resounding success, but not because of a perfect performance. Instead, it’s successful because it helps the congregation, and even the Herdmans themselves, to understand the meaning of Christmas on a deeper level. The story ends on a hopeful note, showing that compassion, understanding, and open-mindedness can change people in surprising ways.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a touching, funny story that encourages readers to look beyond outward appearances and to find meaning in unexpected places. It’s a tale of redemption, kindness, and the transformative power of empathy—wrapped in humor and the holiday spirit. Through the Herdmans’ unconventional interpretation of the nativity, Robinson reminds us that Christmas isn’t about perfection or pageantry, but about love, acceptance, and seeing the world with new eyes.
On the BIG Screen: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever novel as been transformed into a movie and is a Lions Gate and Kingdom Story Company film directed by Dallas Jenkins creator of The Chosen and is Based on the book from Barbara Robinson.
Dallas shares, “I was BORN to make this movie” on Kingdom Story Company You Tube channel. In this passion filled video – HERE, Dallas shares his heart behind this project and being the executive producer why he was so passionate about why he wanted to be part of this film.
This is a must see film features Lauren Graham- as narrator, Judy Green- as Grace, Pete Holmes- as Bob Bradley, and a slew of young talent added to the cast list.
This film depicts many life lessons, but the one that really stood out to me is how
God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He Qualifies the Called.
God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He calls Qualifies the Called
Ever feel unqualified?? Yup me too, you’re not alone!!
This reoccurring life lesson in this movie is an inspiring theme for all. I have felt called in areas in my life especially as a mother, where I feel very unqualified. I can only imagine I am not alone in this feeling. The life lesson of “God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He calls Qualifies the Called”, is shown again and again in this movie through Grace and the Herdman misfits and so many others in the film it is likely to inspire you to step out in faith and become person who you have been created to be.
I talk a little bit about feeling this way, especially since the unexpected sudden passing of my beloved husband Quintin in this video below.
I am quite certain, we all have felt unqualified from time to time. There is no doubt this is exactly how Grace (played by Judy Greer) felt when she stepped in to the role of directing the Christmas pageant after an unforeseen circumstance, or how the misfit Herdman's felt stepping into the pageant roles. Especially with Glady's who is the youngest of the 6 and worst of all becomes the Angel of the Lord announcing the good news of Jesus' birth of the shepherds, serving as a symbol of the nativity story's central message in this heartwarming Christmas classic.
The Herdman's were the least qualified for these positions in the Christmas pageant, yet as depicted in the film they were the reason the community came together in unity throughout the holiday.
All About Perspective:
Isn't all about perspective?
By having the “worst kids in the world” play the angel, The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever emphasizes the universality of the Christmas message, reaching even those who might not traditionally be considered “church-going”.
Gladys' portrayal of the angel is particularly impactful because the Herdman children are known for their poor behavior, adding a humorous twist to the sacred announcement.
The Lord doesn't always call for those we think who are fit for the task. We are constantly looking to qualify others and even ourselves for roles and tasks with a checklist of accomplishments. However, God looks at it differently than we do. He looks at the heart. When the heart is positioned, He calls and when you step into that calling, He qualifies! I am so thankful for that, aren't you?

Get ready to be inspired this holiday season with a heart warming story of how God uses the seemingly unfit for the most incredible blessing. How God turns the ordinary into His extraordinary!

Our community has a tree lighting the evening after Thanksgiving. We all bundle up to drink hot cocoa and watch the skit, listen to the high school choir sing and watch the tree lighting. My grandkids are now becoming a part of the tradition.
Our annual Christmas tradition is to take hot chocolate in thermal cups and drive around different areas of town and look at the Christmas decorations !
I definitely give you a score of 5 !
It started with my great nieces and now added my granddaughters. We always make a Christmas craft for them to take home.
I give your blog post 5 stars! I love it! Our Christmas tradition is after eating with our family my husband reads the Christmas story before opening gifts! Merry Christmas ?
Hi, all the family comes home with dinner & games then before presents are open we read the Christmas story every one taking turns reading different verses till the story is read ♥️?
We all go together the Friday after Thanksgiving to the tree farm and cut our own Christmas tree. Have been doing it for over 40 years. Three generations!
Our family has read Beat Christmas Pageant Ever for years and would love to see the movie!
Our fsmily tradition for a number of years is to go to the Local community theater to watch The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! We are excited about seeing it on the big screen this year.
Every year we team up and decorate Christmas cookies and then post them on Facebook for people to vote on. It’s so much fun and competitive in our family and as the grandsons get older (they are only 3 & 5 right now) I look forward to seeing their creative sides come out as they decorate their own cookies!
We decorated together as a family with Christmas music playing, cookies baking and lots of laughter. We also read the story of Jesus’ birth from Luke. We’d also go to see Christmas lights together as a family. I love traditions.
A Christmas Tradition: Well we have been married for 13 years and we try to go see The Billy Graham Library at Christmas, they have such a beautiful place. They have a live nativity and you can go on a carriage ride. And while there we can get a few gifts/stocking stuffers. And let’s not leave out getting to eat at their little diner and having a Billy Frank Hot Dog ?.
I Love Snowmen. I have a huge collection of Snowmen Ornaments Decorations. I also have a huge collection of Snowmen Shirts. My Late Husband used to tease me to no end about them. Yet a year he would get me a new Snowman Decoration or Ornament and a new shirt. My Family and Friends have helped me keep that tradition alive.
My Christmas ? tradition that I remember, is on Christmas eve we would have snacks, have a warm meal and open 1 Christmas present ? if we had family spend the night, all children would sleep together on the floor in sleeping bags ? and Christmas ? morning we woke up to stocking stuffed with lots of goodies. We would have breakfast and then open our ? presents.
When I was a kid, my parents would tell us a time we could be up on Christmas morning… But we couldn’t set an alarm. And if they heard my brother and I, they would add 15 minutes on to our time before presents. He and I would sleep with walkie talkies so we could talk to each other without Mom and Dad knowing. Lol!
When my girls were young we loved to watch old Christmas movies together. Now today, they do this with their children.
A favorite tradition …..y Grandmother would have a Christmas party just for the grandkids! It would be on a Saturday, and we couldn’t be more excited every year! Grandmother and Granddaddy prepared all week for us, putting the tree up and having all the ornaments ready for us to hang, eating and drinking Christmas Punch! Presents and fun! I cherish those memories, it was just being together. I miss that.
Our family loves to go look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve! While we are out Santa has delivered matching Christmas pjs! We quickly change into pjs and my husband lights the fireplace and grabs his Bible. We sit cozied up to the fire, in the glow of the Christmas tree lights, while he reads the birth story of Jesus. Afterwards, we take communion together as a family. It has become our most treasured tradition ❤️
Well…Merry early Christmas to the entire Conaway Fam ?
One of our most favorite Christmas traditions is to drive around looking at Christmas lights and then the kids open up their gift of cool pjs, candy popcorn and a new blanket for Christmas Day ❤️
Have the best holidays!!
My favorite would be the Christmas Eve candlelight service. We go out for a nice dinner with grandparents and family and then we all go to church. Nothing like Silent Night in a darkened room with candlelight. It calms this frazzled Momma’s souls for a while and sets my heart back and reminds me it isn’t about having it all perfect for Christmas day – it’s all about Jesus and His great love for all of us. Have not stopped praying for your sweet family.
My family dresses up in matching pajamas and takes a trolly ride around the city of Chicago downtown on Christmas Eve!
We love our traditional Christmas Eve family dinner. Then we listen to music while baking cookies, mini breakfast loafs & muffins for Christmas morning and play board games until we all tire. Merry Christmas everyone! ???☃️
We would do this when i was a little girl – i also took mine when they were little i hope they continue on the tradition
I was referring to going out and looking at Christmas lights – i forgot to mention that ?
One of my favorite traditions is giving each child an ornament that represents their year- and reading this book aloud! I always get so tickled over the Herdmans!!
I love this idea I’m going to start doing with this with my kids this is so neat it was a great comment
My children are now grown. But we started a new tradition with my trains loving grandson. We have brunch by the Christmas tree at Macy’s in Chicago, visit Santa, enjoy all the Macy’s windows, then head over to Union Station to ride the Polar Express train. ??
Your blog post a 5 star ⭐️ I love following you so much! My heart goes out to you and your family. I too live in Missouri.
One of our traditions is making homemade peanut butter fudge.
We love our yearly Christmas Eve Candlelight service. My kids get new ornaments each year. When they leave the house, they have a set of ornaments for their new home.
One of our family traditions is to bake a Christmas shaped bread – we’ve done Santa heads, reindeer, snowman, etc.. And, we always watch Rudolph together with hot chocolate.
This blog definitely deserves a 5 ⭐ rating!
My favorite family tradition growing up was we would bake a lot of goodies and we would deliver a plate full of goodies to every neighbor on Christmas Eve.
When I was younger we use to get with my Dads family on Christmas Eve. One of the adults was appointed every year to read to us about the birth of Jesus then we would be led singing silent night while we held candles and just absorbed what Christmas really meant! Looking back it’s truly one of the biggest blessings of my life.
A tradition started with my littles when our life changed – was i would plan a mystery outing they would not know where we were going – i would give them clues and let them try and guess what we were doing!!! We did symphonies, live theatres, fancy restaurants, carriage rides in the snow, limo rides, visited “ The Ark “ in Kentucky, Kights under Louisville it was so much fun!! Now we stay in and have fondue Christmas Eve
