Back Story: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, by the worst kids in the history of the world. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, is a children's novel that was written by Barbara Robinson in 1971. The novel tells a story of six misfit children who volunteer to star in their town's Sunday School Christmas Pageant who end up teaching the town the true meaning of Christmas.
So many are familiar with this classic story and many of us mama's have shared this inspiring story to our kiddos throughout the holiday season. Us mama's have been waiting for the release of this one for decades now!

If you are not familiar with the story, here is a brief synopsis.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson is a humorous, heartwarming story about the true spirit of Christmas. The story centers around the Herdmans, a family of six unruly, misfit kids who are notorious in their small town for causing trouble. The Herdman children—Ralph, Imogene, Leroy, Claude, Ollie, and Gladys—are loud, rude, and mischievous, stealing and bullying their way through life. Everyone avoids them whenever possible, especially at church, where they never show up. However, everything changes one year when the Herdmans unexpectedly decide to attend Sunday school.
The story is narrated by a young girl whose mother, Grace Bradley, is put in charge of the church’s annual Christmas pageant after the usual director breaks her leg. This year’s play is in danger of falling apart, especially when the Herdmans show up and volunteer for the lead roles. To the horror of the other church members, the Herdmans insist on playing Mary, Joseph, the Wise Men, and even the Angel of the Lord.
Despite the other church kids’ dismay, the Herdmans approach the nativity story with fresh, if unconventional, enthusiasm. Since they’ve never heard the Christmas story before, they react with astonishment to the hardships Mary and Joseph endured. They’re outraged at the lack of shelter for Mary and horrified by King Herod’s plans. Their innocence and genuine, if sometimes misplaced, passion begin to change the way others see the Christmas story, reminding everyone of the true meaning behind it.
As rehearsals proceed, the townspeople anticipate chaos and disaster. Yet, they slowly realize the Herdmans are bringing something unique and raw to the play. Although their methods are unorthodox—the Wise Men bring a ham instead of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and Imogene, as Mary, ends up with a tear-streaked face—this performance unexpectedly captures the vulnerability and emotion of the nativity. By stripping away the usual polished pageantry, the Herdmans highlight the struggles and hope in the Christmas story in a way that feels real to everyone present.
In the end, the pageant is a resounding success, but not because of a perfect performance. Instead, it’s successful because it helps the congregation, and even the Herdmans themselves, to understand the meaning of Christmas on a deeper level. The story ends on a hopeful note, showing that compassion, understanding, and open-mindedness can change people in surprising ways.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a touching, funny story that encourages readers to look beyond outward appearances and to find meaning in unexpected places. It’s a tale of redemption, kindness, and the transformative power of empathy—wrapped in humor and the holiday spirit. Through the Herdmans’ unconventional interpretation of the nativity, Robinson reminds us that Christmas isn’t about perfection or pageantry, but about love, acceptance, and seeing the world with new eyes.
On the BIG Screen: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever novel as been transformed into a movie and is a Lions Gate and Kingdom Story Company film directed by Dallas Jenkins creator of The Chosen and is Based on the book from Barbara Robinson.
Dallas shares, “I was BORN to make this movie” on Kingdom Story Company You Tube channel. In this passion filled video – HERE, Dallas shares his heart behind this project and being the executive producer why he was so passionate about why he wanted to be part of this film.
This is a must see film features Lauren Graham- as narrator, Judy Green- as Grace, Pete Holmes- as Bob Bradley, and a slew of young talent added to the cast list.
This film depicts many life lessons, but the one that really stood out to me is how
God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He Qualifies the Called.
God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He calls Qualifies the Called
Ever feel unqualified?? Yup me too, you’re not alone!!
This reoccurring life lesson in this movie is an inspiring theme for all. I have felt called in areas in my life especially as a mother, where I feel very unqualified. I can only imagine I am not alone in this feeling. The life lesson of “God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He calls Qualifies the Called”, is shown again and again in this movie through Grace and the Herdman misfits and so many others in the film it is likely to inspire you to step out in faith and become person who you have been created to be.
I talk a little bit about feeling this way, especially since the unexpected sudden passing of my beloved husband Quintin in this video below.
I am quite certain, we all have felt unqualified from time to time. There is no doubt this is exactly how Grace (played by Judy Greer) felt when she stepped in to the role of directing the Christmas pageant after an unforeseen circumstance, or how the misfit Herdman's felt stepping into the pageant roles. Especially with Glady's who is the youngest of the 6 and worst of all becomes the Angel of the Lord announcing the good news of Jesus' birth of the shepherds, serving as a symbol of the nativity story's central message in this heartwarming Christmas classic.
The Herdman's were the least qualified for these positions in the Christmas pageant, yet as depicted in the film they were the reason the community came together in unity throughout the holiday.
All About Perspective:
Isn't all about perspective?
By having the “worst kids in the world” play the angel, The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever emphasizes the universality of the Christmas message, reaching even those who might not traditionally be considered “church-going”.
Gladys' portrayal of the angel is particularly impactful because the Herdman children are known for their poor behavior, adding a humorous twist to the sacred announcement.
The Lord doesn't always call for those we think who are fit for the task. We are constantly looking to qualify others and even ourselves for roles and tasks with a checklist of accomplishments. However, God looks at it differently than we do. He looks at the heart. When the heart is positioned, He calls and when you step into that calling, He qualifies! I am so thankful for that, aren't you?

Get ready to be inspired this holiday season with a heart warming story of how God uses the seemingly unfit for the most incredible blessing. How God turns the ordinary into His extraordinary!

We watch movies the weeks leading to Christmas! Christmas Vacation, Elf, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever are just a few of our favorites. When I taught 8th grade English, the book was always one I read to the class the week before Christmas break started! Thank you for this opportunity!
When my son was little, I used to kiss his cheek with red lipstick, then make Santa footprints with baby powder coming from the fireplace. He thought Santa had come to his room and kissed him! Even before he would run to the Christmas tree, he would go look in the mirror to make sure Santa had kissed his sweet little cheek!! One of my most cherished memories of Christmas with my son♥️?
We make candy and watch A Christmas Story. But most of all worshipping the birth of my Savior Jesus Christ and spending time with family
We have made almond flavored sugar cookies for 65 years! Now my grandchildren come and use the cookie cutters and all the sprinkles they can get on them! What a wonderful mess!

When I was a little girl my mom was single raising three kids. We did not have money for gifts but she was a great baker so we would spend a Saturday baking goodies and rolls and then we would deliver the plates to our neighbors and friends. We would often carol as we knocked on doors. As a kid this was fun and delicious. My siblings and I have carried this tradition on even after my mom passed away in 2017. Our children look forward to “Baking day”. It is one of the best traditions we have.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lori, I love that you’re a part of my life. So glad I found you along the way!
One of our traditions is playing fun and goofy games together. I love hearing everyone laughing and cutting up with each other. I need to start thinking about what games we’re going to play this year!
I’m excited about this movie!!
Blog review 5⭐
A Christmas tradition we have is to go visit dad at work (my husband is a police officer) and then go to the movies. We do this every holiday he works.
When the kids were little I felt like they were missing something big because he has to work on most holidays, but as they got older I realized the traditions we’ve made are unique and special. We love visiting daddy at work and then we pass the time by doing something that we enjoy- a movie!
We go look at Christmas lights around our town and go to the Christmas parades
Christmas Eve our 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren along with spouses and friends meet at our house for food, gift exchange and fellowship. Some will spend the night.
Christmas pjs and Christmas books for bedtime! After looking at lights of course!
One of our favorite traditions has become the white elephant exchange at my mom’s home on Christmas Day with the siblings & their families. My kids are now in their twenties and pick out the funniest gifts. There always one gift that someone purchased that seems to be everyone’s favorite and gets stolen by another gifter. It’s loud and funny and so much fun.
Cookie baking day! Dedicate 1 day everyone picks a cookie and we bake all day and hand out cookies to neighbors, friends and family! This Christmas will be out 17 year!
My parents always made Christmas so special for us. My favorite part, and maybe the simplest, was the cute touches put on presents. They were just always wrapped so nicely.
Thanks for being amazing and inspiring me with your posts.
