Biscuits with Chocolate Gravy: A Family Tradition

There is something so beautiful to me about watching the traditions of two families meld together to become their own tradition. That is exactly how this biscuits with chocolate gravy recipe came to be.

I grew up loving my mom's chocolate gravy. My late husband Q grew up loving his mom's biscuits. And both our mom's love each of our children as every grandmother should.

I remember when my kiddos were little they would beg “Nanna” for her chocolate gravy, and of course she would always say yes. I think that will be a fun part of being a grandmother. Getting to spoil your children's children. I have more than a few years before I will be in that stage of life but I can't help but think of what it will be like.

In all honesty, my dreams of what life would look like as a grandmother have changed drastically. Ever since Q went to be with the Lord, those dreams hurt.

I ache for what would have been, for what should have been our lives as grandparents. Going to meet our grandbabies in the hospital together, then watching the children that we have pour our hearts and souls into become parents. I have no doubt that my boys will be great fathers because they had such an incredible example in Q. I also know that my girls will not settle when it comes to choosing their mate. Q truly was the best example of a husband and father I could ever ask for.

After he passed I found a note in his phone labeled “Things I Want My Kids To Know.” It was full of wisdom for our children, but he didn't just leave this wisdom in a note. He showed it in the way he lived each and every day. He believed in being present for our kids and I am thankful everyday for the memories we all have because of that.

He also raised our kids on his mama's homemade biscuits. From the time they were little, he would whip up her biscuits for them (and us) to enjoy. Once the girls were old enough to knead the dough, that turned into a father-daughter cooking date almost every week. We have so many great memories in this kitchen. From cooking to dancing, this kitchen has seen it all.

This kitchen was also the place that younger me (with 4 kids 7 and younger) was at her whits end with chocolate gravy. We live a few hours away from my mom, and so it was a lot of grandmother spoiling when she came to visit. One morning, she was letting the kids eat chocolate gravy for breakfast. Just Chocolate Gravy. I said, “Mom! At least make them have it on a banana or something!” So the next morning the kids were eating Chocolate Gravy on bananas and Q came in and said “OH! We should try it on my mom's biscuits!”

And so Biscuits with Chocolate Gravy was born! Two family traditions melded into one! This recipe still makes me smile today. Yes, it is a broken hearted smile, because I would give anything to have my Q physically with me everyday; but we will continue to carry him with us in each step we take.

And today we will smile and make this delicious family tradition recipe, biscuits with chocolate gravy!

My grandmother always made chocolate gravy and this recipe taste just like what she made. She always made it in a cast-iron skillet and she would serve it with homemade biscuits or fresh toast. Thank you for sharing perfect recipe.

Oh my gosh! I made This for my grands! They love it. 2 of them had over biscuits and two of them had it over bananas. I preferred The biscuits! SO GOOD and easy. I am a widow also and am heartbroken that my Grands lost their beloved Pop. We all cherish memories.
