Apple Back to School Cookies (NO-BAKE)

My girls and I made these adorable Oreo Apples as our Back to School Cookies this year and we had the best time! They’re not only delicious, but they are also quick, simple, and just plain fun to make—perfect for easing into that back-to-school groove. These little apple-shaped treats have become an instant favorite in our house. If you can crush cookies, roll a ball, and stick in a pretzel, you’re golden. It’s that easy.

I mean it, mamas! This is the kind of recipe even the craziest, busiest mama can pull off—especially in those hard parenting stages when you’re just trying to make it through the day. Let me just pause right here and say: I see you. You are doing a great job, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

If I could give you one tip for starting back to school? Place a Walmart pickup order! You can check so many things off your list and all you have to do is add it to your cart and drive to Walmart. Don’t fight the crowds, pickup is everything for Crazy Busy Mamas.

Having girls is such a gift. I love being both a boy mom and a girl mom, but let’s be real—my boys aren’t exactly jumping at the chance to make apple-shaped Oreo balls with me. Now, eating them? Oh, they’re there in a flash. Usually right as the chocolate is still warm and gooey, magically appearing in the kitchen like they’ve been summoned by the smell alone. But that is with anything we make, not just back to school cookies!

But with my girls, the baking becomes a memory. We laugh, we make a mess, we talk about school and friends and Jesus—and somewhere in the middle of all that, we turn crushed cookies and melting chocolate into something sweet and meaningful. Meanwhile, the boys float in like it’s snack time at Costco and snag a few “samples” before heading back out the door. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love getting to watch my kids live their lives and connecting with them in little ways while they are!

One of my absolute favorite ways to connect with my kids is in the kitchen. It might look like chaos—especially with little ones—but it’s the kind of chaos I treasure. If you’ve ever tried baking with toddlers, you know what I mean. You’ll end up with chocolate on the counter, sprinkles in someone’s hair, and probably a pretzel stem or two (*cough* or 8) on the floor. But you also get giggles, sticky hugs, and memories that stay long after the last treat is eaten.

They say you only get 18 summers with your kids, but those school years fly by even faster. It feels like just yesterday that Ella and Lily were toddlers trying to “help” stir the bowl, and now they are almost grown— and wise beyond their years. Both full of joy, and already being used by God in beautiful ways.

Ella has an empathic warmth about her that pulls people in and makes everyone feel not only welcome but extra ordinary! And Lily’s smile? It lights up every room, and her laugh is one of my favorite sounds in the world. Watching each of them grow into the woman God made her to be has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

So as school starts and life ramps back up, don’t wait for the perfect moment. Forget the idea of a spotless kitchen or Instagram-worthy treats. Instead, let go of perfection. Embrace the mess. Embrace the laughter. Embrace being flawsome. Just love Jesus, live for Jesus, and let everything else fall into place.

These Oreo Apple Treats aren’t just a cute snack. They’re connection. They’re tradition. They’re a reminder that the kitchen isn’t just a place to feed bellies—it’s a place to feed hearts. And after losing our Q last year, I’ve learned that sometimes the best healing moments happen right there—together, over something warm, sweet, and shared.

So let’s take a deep breath, grab some Oreos, and make a little magic in the kitchen.
