(Because December Is Already Full Enough!)
Simple, adorable setups to sprinkle a little magic into your December — no stress required.

If you’ve ever woken up in a panic thinking, “Oh no… the elf didn’t move!” — welcome, Mama. You are absolutely in the right place. December has a way of stacking itself high with concerts, games, shopping, wrapping presents, making dinner, working late, early mornings, and somehow a mountain of laundry that multiplies on its own. And in the middle of all of that… this tiny stuffed elf is over here expecting a nightly relocation like it’s on payroll.
But here’s the truth no one tells you loud enough:
Elf on the Shelf does NOT have to be hard.
It doesn’t need glitter explosions or Pinterest-level crafting.
It doesn’t need fancy backdrops or hours of planning.
And it most definitely does not need to add stress to your already full plate.
Some of the sweetest, most magical ideas are the simple ones — the ones you set up while half-asleep, still wearing yesterday’s sweatshirt, whispering “Lord please let this be enough.”
So today, I’m sharing 8 easy Elf on the Shelf ideas from our own home over the years — including the exact setups from the photos we used. These are quick, cute, and perfect for creating a little joy in the middle of your beautifully chaotic December.
Let’s jump in.
1. Storytime With the Elves — A December 1st Classic
There’s something nostalgic about starting December with a story. Our elves always make their debut sitting beside the classic Elf on the Shelf book — a sweet, simple setup that instantly sets the tone for the month.
I usually place them on a Christmas table runner or tray with a little festive décor tucked behind them, almost like they just slid in from the North Pole and dropped off the book as proof.
If you want a setup that looks cozy and meaningful without lifting more than a finger? This is it.

2. The Elf Kissing Booth — Cute, Silly & Always a Favorite
This one is pure fun. A tiny decorative box becomes a “kissing booth,” the elves hop inside, and I scatter a few Hershey’s Kisses around them.
It’s playful.
It’s sweet.
It’s just the right amount of mischief.
And it takes maybe 15 seconds to put together. No cutting, no gluing, no crafting. Just a box, a sign, and a handful of chocolate kisses. Easy win!

3. A Cozy Campout Under the Tent — Snuggled In for the Night
If you want something that looks impressive with almost zero effort, this tiny tent setup is your best friend. We used a small play tent and turned a little scrap of fabric into a “sleeping bag,” then tucked both elves inside like they were settling in under the stars.
Place them by the tree or the fireplace and suddenly it looks like a full-blown magical scene. Here’s a little Crazy Busy Mama secret:
You can leave them here for TWO nights.
Just shift the tent, change their pose, or add a tiny prop. No one will know — and you just bought yourself a night off.
Bless it. Truly.

4. The Oreo Bandits — Mischief in the Kitchen
This is always a crowd-pleaser. The elves are posed like they got caught mid-snack with a box of Oreos cracked open and crumbs scattered around. It’s funny every single time.
But here’s the beauty:
You can swap the Oreos for literally anything you already have out — wrapping paper, bows, a string of lights, ornaments, or even Christmas cards.
It’s the “caught red-handed” moment that makes it cute, not the prop. Easy. Fast. Kids LOVE it.

5. Hide-and-Seek Elf — The Kitchen Edition
Our elf was hiding behind the Christmas tree next to my Crazy Busy Mama Holiday Cookbook — but here’s what I love about this setup and why it works for ANY family:
It’s a reminder that elf setups do NOT have to be complicated.
Sometimes you just tuck your elf somewhere in the kitchen, add a little Christmas décor, and let the kids hunt for him.
Behind a cookbook.
Next to the mixer.
Inside the pantry.
Peeking out of a cabinet.
Done.
Simple.
Magical.
And takes about three seconds. Which is exactly the amount of energy most of us have left by mid-December.

6. The Viral “6–7” Elf — A Trendy, Easy Laugh
Kids and teens will get a kick out of this one because it nods to that viral joke that’s everywhere right now. We propped our elf next to a card with a 6 and another with a 7, and instantly it became one of those silly setups older kids appreciate way more than we expect.
It’s quick, it’s relevant, and honestly… it makes you look like a cool mom who somehow keeps up with trends despite living in the land of Did I switch the laundry? and Why is there glitter on the dog?
This one takes almost no effort — and it’s guaranteed to get a morning giggle.

7. The Candy Cane Crusher — Cookie Chaos in the Kitchen
This might be my personal favorite. Our elf held a tiny rolling pin and looked like he was smashing candy canes to “help” make Christmas cookies. A few crumbs, a sprinkle of crushed peppermint, and boom — a whole cute scene with basically no setup.
And listen… nothing says December with kids quite like a slightly messy kitchen moment. It’s relatable, it’s cute, and it looks like the elf has been working extra hard to bring a little magic into the house.
8. A Simple Night Off — Because You Deserve It, Mama
This final idea isn’t a setup — it’s a reminder.
If you forget to move the elf…
If you’re too tired…
If you fall asleep on the couch at 9:00 p.m. with your hand still in a bag of pretzels…
You can blame the elf.
He was tired.
He didn’t feel like moving.
The North Pole WiFi went out.
Mrs. Claus needed him.
He froze in place.
Your kids will roll with it.
You are doing amazing.
And you deserve grace in December just as much as anyone else.
As We Wrap Up This Little Bit of Magic
December is full to the brim — we all feel it. And yet somehow, these silly little elf moments become bright spots in the middle of the chaos. Not because they’re perfect or elaborate, but because they’re fun. Sweet. Lighthearted. Easy.
That’s all our kids really want anyway:
a little magic tucked inside an ordinary morning.
So here’s to simple elf setups…
To nights when you pull something together in 30 seconds flat…
To laughter tucked inside playful little scenes…
And to making December feel just a bit brighter, one tiny idea at a time. ✨
