Is there anything more bittersweet than back-to-school season? The end of summer brings a weird mix of emotions— excitement, chaos, and the haunting sound of your kids saying “I’m bored” for the umteenth time… but also that sweet, sweet whisper of routine is SO CLOSE.
Or I am sure some of us Crazy Busy Mama’s have some littles in your life who are counting down the days until they are headed back to school? Or more like my bigs who are soaking up these last moments of summer?! To celebrate (or soothe) that chaotic transition, we made these Back-to-School S’more Chalkboards. They are an adorable, edible craft that is equal parts nostalgic and delicious. While s’mores often remind me of a nice fall campfire type snack, these are the perfect precursor to getting more of that s’more flavor— NOW.

Whether you are a Mama who is ready for some quite time, me time, time to think time, free time around the house, or a Mama who is going to miss having your kids home, friends gathered around, neighborhood children’s giggles through the open windows, and waiting way to late to decide what its going to be for supper this evening, we’ve got the perfect recipes to get you back to school in one piece.

When I would think about children, and becoming a mom, these type of days, these types of crafts and activities are what I could hardly wait to do with my kids. I didn’t really dream or think about the reality of how busy life can really get, especially with four kids. While I am no longer in the thick of it with them all being so little, I am grateful for anytime I did step aside from our Crazy Busy life, and Q and I would just soak in the moments with our kids. Little did I know, that we would only have a few more summers together with Q. These memories and this picture means so much more to me now, than I ever knew it would. I look back on some of our favorite memories, lake time, and it is just spending time together, making messes and memories, that we now hold so dear to our hearts.

Moving on before I end up spilling all of my favorite memories we have made in this one post—there is time for that yet— lets get into what is so great about these extra sweet back-to-school chalkboards!

How to Make Back- to – School S’MORE Chalkboards: A Sweet Goodbye to Summer
The hardest part about this whole thing is creating the “writing in the chalkboard” and if you are working with little littles, I recommend doing this step first, so they can just put them all together afterwards.
To do this you simply will take your toothpick and etch into the back of the chocolate bar a fun school themed quote or saying. We loved the simple ABC and 1+2=3 but feel free to customize with names or anything else your kids may love!
Here are a few examples:

Once that is done, lightly tap some powdered sugar onto the chocolate, and use the back of a spoon to press and make sure it really gets into those letters. Then with a very lightly damp paper towel, or a dry one (just takes a smidge longer) wipe across the chocolate bar without pressing to hard to remove the excess powdered sugar. It is totally fine if a little bit is left, as who’s really ever seen a fully clean chalkboard in a school anyways?!

It is totally fine if a little bit is left, as who’s really ever seen a fully clean chalkboard in a school anyways?!
First you will take your Graham Cracker, and after some trial and error, I found the end result is a bit cuter if it is placed with the seam going verticle rather than horizontal. It will end up looking like your chalkboard has a cute little frame if you do it vertically assuming you are using Great Value graham crackers and Hersheys Chocolate bars.

Then spread a dab of marshmallow fluff on the center of the chocolate bar. Careful not to go to high or it will squeeze out the top and ruin the “frame” look of the chalkboard. Ask me how I know…

Next add the ready made chalkboard. Even if the kids are designing their own, I still recommend doing that first as it is much harder to work with once attached to the cracker.

Once that is on, lets use the frosting as a glue to add the shelf for the chalk and erasers, as well as our final details of the cute apple with a green leaf (M&Ms and Sprinkle) and place our piece of chalk on the shelf (tictac).

And there you have it! Assembling these is a breeze and so much fun, especially if chatting about what’s to come this next school year, and all the fun and adventures we plan to have!
I also can’t help but recommend to make a few extras to eat NOW, if that wasn’t the plan already!

I have created a Walmart List of everything you will need for this super fun and quick craft here, so go ahead and simply add to cart, and get started on making positive memories around the new school year!
How to Make Your Chalkboards:
1. Take the toothpick to the backside of the chocolate bar and etch in a fun back-to-school day themed word or image. Have fun with this part, let your creativity flow.
2. Lightly spread powdered sugar onto the etching, and press softly with back of spoon to ensure it stays. Shake off excess powdered sugar, and with a paper towel, wipe the rest.
3. Spread some fluff on the center of the graham cracker- This is your sticky base!
4. Add your premade Chalkboard chocolate piece directly to the full.
5. Using the frosting as a glue, place the pretzel “chalk tray” along the bottom of the chocolate bar.
6. Add final touches of an apple and its green leaf where-ever you feel it fits best, as well as the tic-tac piece of chalk resting on the tray.
7. Admire, snap all the pics, and enjoy before the rush of a fun craft and the sugar crash hit all at once!
Crazy Busy Mama Tip:
✨Tips and Tricks ✨
-When etching, be sure to go a bit deeper. Some of mine were surface level, and the powdered sugar kept wiping off even in the crease.
-Don’t have fluff? Melted marshmallows work too— just make sure to work fast or they’ll harder before you have a chance to say S’mo…
-Make it a party! Use these for a back-to-school night, first-day breakfast treat, or even as a lunchbox surprise.
Sometimes it’s the little crafts— the sticky fingers, the way there is always one kid who is inevitably going to write “POOP” on their chalkboard, the loud giggles while sneaking a swipe of marshmallow fluff— that make you realize these moments really are some of the good old days in the making.
So here’s to new memories, new teachers, early mornings, lots of coffee, and finding our new normal again.
Happy Back-to-School Friends. 💛
