How to Make Hidden Heart Red Velvet Loaf Cake: Step-by-Step Guide

    Prepare the Red Velvet Batter

Mix the red velvet cake mix according to the directions on the back of the box. Set aside.

        Prepare the Angel Food Hearts

Remove the angel food cake from the freezer.

Slice the cake into 1-inch thick slices.

Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut heart shapes from each slice.

(Work carefully — frozen cake holds its shape best.)

                  Prep the Loaf Pan

Grease a loaf pan well or line it with parchment paper.

                      Create the Hidden Heart Layer

Pour about 1 inch of red velvet batter into the bottom of the loaf pan — just enough to lightly cover the bottom.

                          Arrange the Hearts

Place two angel food cake hearts side by side, standing upright, in the center of the loaf pan.

Continue lining up the hearts straight down the middle of the pan, keeping them snug and upright to form a continuous row.

                                Add Remaining Batter

Carefully pour the remaining red velvet batter over and around the hearts, making sure they are fully covered.

                                    Bake

Bake at 350°F for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the red velvet cake (not the angel food) comes out clean.

                                        Cool & Slice

Allow the cake to cool before removing from the pan.

Slice to reveal two hidden heart shapes in the center of every slice.

                                              Notes

                                              • Frozen angel food cake makes cutting hearts much easier.
                                              • Do not overbake — check only the red velvet portion for doneness.
                                              • Cool fully before slicing for the cleanest heart reveal.
